A silverback is much larger than a female. In a fight, A Grizzly would probably win because of his larger size, better hide (fat and fur) and weapons (claws and teeth)Įven if Gorillas are "Pound-per-Pound" stronger than bears. A male gorilla that is too old to be a juvenile but too young to be a silverback is referred to as a blackback. Would the grizzly bear sneak up and blindside the gorilla? Would the gorilla be in an environment that's favorable to it? Is the grizzly bear desperate to feed on something before hibernation or is it just protecting its young? There's no clear cut way to say what would win 10 out of 10 times. Grizzly bears and silverback gorillas don't live in the same habitat so an encounter is unlikely. It was a western lowland Gorilla named Phil. The biggest Gorilla ever found in captivity was even larger than the one found in Cameroon. Grizzly bear claws are rather dull, meant more for shoveling for roots instead of slicing animal flesh. The bulk of people assume the Grizzly would win hands down but then there is the psychological side of things. Gorillas are also way smarter and has opposable thumbs while Grizzly has huge claws. This question has been asked many, many, many, many, many times before and the answer across multiple sites and sources has always been the bear. It was hunted and shot in the town of Ambam in Cameroon. That's the tale of the tape, bear obviously larger, Gorilla stronger in general and a stronger bite force. But to be totally honest, we would need a scenario in which this could happen. The heaviest and largest Gorilla ever recorded in the wild was a 6ft (1.83m), with a weight of 589 lb (267 kg) massive silverback. Not to mention they can be considered physically more powerful and capable with their opposable thumbs. Not only are they much more creative and likely to use things to their advantage such as the terrain and nearby tools as weapons, gorillas are highly social and live in harems. This is hilarious! Without getting into as much detail and heated debate, I confidently can say a silverback gorilla would curbstomp a grizzly. You know what, very recently I spent my entire hour-long lunch break with a few buddies of mine discussing this exact same topic.
